We’ve made creating a crackle effect on your next painting project as easy as we can! Want to create an antique look or crackle finish for texture and interest? We’ve got a high quality crackle treatment that is as easy as brushing on a clear coat of paint! We call it “All Cracked Up”. Notice the finish underneath these two cans of paint, isn’t it beautiful? This was created with this “All Cracked Up” paint. To create a crackle finish you begin with one layer of paint, then paint on the “All Cracked Up” coat, and then add another coat of regular paint. Imagine the different color combinations you could achieve. This photo shows a Pearwood color paint base coat, then All Cracked Up, with Steeple White on top. Notice how you can see the base coat color through the crackle effect. If you’d like to see this technique done in person, check out this video of our owner, Laney Landis adding the final coat of paint to a crackle project. She also gives a few directions on how to create different crackle effects, using brush strokes or a plastic bag. Here is another example of Crackle Paint at work: The borders of these cabinet doors were painted with Colonial White and allowed to dry. Then, a coat of Crackle Paint was applied. When that was dry I painted over the top with Rittenhouse Green. The paint crackles immediately! A crackle effect can add visual interest, or an aged look. Happy painting everyone! Today we’re going to see how easy, FUN and striking a painting technique can be. Above you can see a before and after shot of a piece of furniture painted with with the finger glazing technique. This Old Village Paint user (and artist) Heide Drewes of Black Swamp Studio began by painting the entire piece Wild Bayberry blue. Then, she brushed on Old Village Paint Brown Graining Liquid. Next, she used her finger to scrape part of the graining liquid away, creating this beautiful stripe effect. Heide notes that she’s tried doing this technique with a rubber glove on her hand, but the final effect lacks the “softness” that occurs when she works without gloves. You can use a rag dipped in paint thinner to remove the graining liquid from edges. I love the Wild Bayberry color showing through! And here’s the final product. I love it! How To Use Cream Wax to Create Patina

Not many people know that along with paint, we also sell a wonderful cream wax, called “Schrack’s Cream Wax.” It is a soft wax that can be mixed with the paint or used straight out of the can for a Wax~Dry~Buff patina! What’s patina? “a gloss or sheen on wooden furniture produced by age and polishing” Our Schrack’s Wax is really nice stuff and half the price of competitive quality wax. Schrack’s Cream Wax can also be mixed with any of our Old Village Paints to create all kinds of primitive to fine furniture finishes and patinas! It can also be mixed with metallic powders. The photo below shows a wax that has been tinted with a darker color, and then added to a white surface. Here’s an example of what it might look like if you used wax, mixed with a metallic paint/powder to add some unique character. Remember that while there are do’s and dont’s to painting, there is also a lot of discovery and fun in experimenting, and wax is one of those products that offers many different options for that. How To Create a Weathered Wood Effect

Good Morning! Today we’re offering a short tutorial on creating a weathered wood effect with some simple products. Let’s get started! You’ll need: Wood/furniture Dry paintbrush Paint Steel Wool or sandpaper a stain or sealant (optional) First, make sure the wood is dry and clean. Second, take your paint (usually a shade of white) and apply it to the wood with a dry brush. Only dip the very edge of the brush into the paint, and then brush long strokes until all of the paint is off the brush. (In the photo below the wood has been painted a very dark color, but it helps you see how little paint is applied at a time with just the end of the paintbrush being dipped in the paint.) Third. Allow to dry. Now, use steel wool or sandpaper to partially sand the white paint off in a number of areas. Allow yourself to experiment a bit. See what creates the exact effect you like. You can always sand down and repaint a section if you don’t like it. Ta-da, weathered wood! (On the photo above you’ll notice that two colors, white as well as a teal was used during step two.) Optional final step: you can create a darker colored effect by adding a stain over the top of the paint you added in step two. Or you can add a clear sealant. Before taking this step, be sure to wipe your wood with a clean dry cloth. Have you created this look? Post some pictures! We’d love to see them!
